Memorial Day has arrived, the pools have opened and summer is in full swing! My kiddos are ready to play outside, swim, go to summer camps, stay up late, watch movies and have fun.  But what about reading?  We have summer math workbooks and summer language arts workbooks and the best of intentions to make it to the library.  Reading during the summer months helps kids keep their skills up and have fun.  When kids stop reading, they actually lose some of what they learned during the school year.  Educators refer to this as the "summer slide".  Some even equate reading to exercise.  If you don't exercise, you lose muscle and if you don't read, you can lose literacy skills.  Thus, keep on reading while school is out!!
